Fortunately (or unfortunately as it might be), by the early 1990s, it was more or less assumed that computers would be obsolete in a few years, so they stop making them as robust as they use to. If you have an old IBM PC or PC-XT, there is an excellent chance that it will still work, but your 486.... Probably not .

I generally like to be 6 months to a year behind the cutting edge on technology. Prices tend to drop enough in that period to make it a reasonable purchase, but the technology is still up to date enough that I don't feel like a dinosaur for a year or two.
