I was taught basic speed reading at uni.

First we were shown how to focus the eyes on a couple of words at a time so instead of moving your eyes from one word to the next which is labour intensive, your eyes take in two words. Just a matter of training your eyes on a different method of reading.

I can now read a whole sentence at a time and use this frequently for technical or factual books. But for novels I slow the pace down and just pick out a few words in one go.

Can have its uses.
