Is it possible to disable hyperlinks in ePubs?

Hello folks! I'm currently reading a book in ePub format. Footnote links in this document are wrapped around entire sentences or parts of sentences. The problem is that the 505 renders hyperlink "hovers" as white text on a black background. When the page loads up, my eyes are immediately drawn to the first link in the page sitting there like a huge mole in the middle of the page. I find this incredibly distracting.

I've tried changing the CSS style in the ePub source, but this hasn't had any effect on the way the page renders. Is there any way to disable the default hyperlink behavior or the way links are rendered?
