Does the PDF open on your computer? If not, it is probably the file.
If it does open, another possibility is to copy and past the whole PDF text into Word and save it as a RTF and then convert it LRF or EPUB.
You can try using caliber to directly convert from PDF to LRF as robkat suggested. I had an epub that wouldn't open on my reader (but did open on my computer) and converting it to LRF worked (don't ask me why, though).
