I definitely read sci-fi, but for some reason I missed out on it when I first started down this path, and just never get around to reading it. Do I need to go download it Right Now?

Dune is an acknowledged classic, and spawned a (bad) Dino DeLaurentis film and a decent pair of SciFi channel mini-series.
Herbert wrote a number of books in the Dune Universe, and his son Brian has been continuing the line in collaboration with Kevin Anderson. If you like Dune, also get and read _Dune Messiah_ and _Children of Dune_. They were written as three parts of one very long book, but split for publishing. After that, consider whether you want to continue, as opinions vary widely on how good subsequent volumes are.
Whatever you do, get and read _Dune_.
