left alignment

I like my books left aligned with a space between paragraphs.
Most convert fine this way but some just won't

I have converted these files to rtf and the main difference seems to be that the rtf file has an arrow (like the one on the enter key) instead of the Carriage return ¶
Converting to text and back usually removes all formatting and the best way I have found is to convert to rtf, cut and paste to notepad and then cut and paste back into word, save and convert. A tad kludgy.

Is there an easier/better way?

Thanks
Helen
