I am surprised by a level of hostility that my dear fellow Mobilereaders show here.
Derek did not want to get B&N to repair screen that was broken by previous user, which is clearly a non-warranty-repair case, for free. He wanted to pay for repair.
They seem to refuse to repair devices that are not in warranty. It is not nice, but not completely unheard of.
In my country if you purchase a cheap drill or an angle grinder at the big-name chain, they won't provide repairs either. They do replace broken ones under warranty for new ones, but is it. Of course our European laws forbid such thing, so the chain simply asks ridiculously high prices for repair. Enough to pay for several new drills or grinders.
Or, go and try to get a faulty computer motherboard repaired. Or a graphics card. I have "repaired" large numbers of fancy graphics cards by refurbishing a stuck fan, or replacing very flimsy heatsink for one I have salvaged from a discarded, very obsolete PCs.
What is wrong with obtaining a faulty equipment and then trying to repair it or get it repaired if you can't afford a new one? For some people $180 is an impulse buy, for others it is a year worth of "entertainment budget". I personally own LOTS of things I have salvaged, or repaired.
