I wouldn't buy the 1st generation iPad. It's a compelling device but as always with Apple the 2nd generation will offer more for your money. Front facing camera? Higher resolution like the iP4? More RAM/$?

I wouldn't recommend the PRS-900 unless touchscreen capability is a must for you - the glare is a real problem for me. It becomes a major distraction at times when all I want to do is relax and read, not fidget with different positions or moving my portable LED light around to get the best angle. The Sony is a well built device but I think the screen really ruins the experience for me, and their book store and browsing/buying experience is just sub-par compared to Amazon (if that's important to you).

I'm waiting for the K3 to be released to see if the reviews pan out as positive as it sounds they will be, and will then order the graphite version. I'd sell my PRS-900 if I could recoup half of what I paid for it but the price has dropped almost 50% in less than a year, and it's worth more for me just to keep it and use it for the rare occasion I need an ePub book and don't want to convert it.
