As a Linux user, personally I say no. But my needs are fairly simple. I end up converting everything anyway, so I might as well make sure I can read it wherever I need to. I currently use a Nokia N800, which does a pretty good job at epubs and pdfs. Hell, I can even read every epub I have on a decade old Zaurus (5600) with no problem.
Since I'm reading on devices that really weren't marketed as ereaders, well, I expect to have to put in some extra effort.
I'll tell you right now though, with that extra effort I am assured that all my files will be readable for many, many years to come, no matter the device.
