I know a lot of people here don't like using the Sony Reader (500 or 505) for reading PDF files, but I find it to work reasonably well for most ebooks when it is switched to read in landscape mode. See for yourself:

Not bad, if you don't mind slightly small-ish (but very legible) text. No conversion required — just plug in an SD card or Memory Stick and go.
