I suspect they could've bought the rights to eReader DRM without taking over the store. (However, they might've wanted *exclusive and total* rights to the DRM, and might've taken over the store as part of that.)

It actually takes the books away from the 'our-devices-only' and allows for as many devices as have access to ADE updated software to use BN ebooks.
I don't like DRM, but if there is going to be DRM, I would rather it be something like BN uses, which I can control than something like Adept or Kindle which is server based.
Since I'm prone to using "obsolete" devices (I got a Clie a couple of years after Sony stopped supporting them, and used it daily for two years), I'm not happy with any DRM. My preference for one form over another is entirely based on how easy it is to crack. And that's all academic for me at the moment; I don't currently have the ability to deal with any DRM other than watermarking.

Occasionally, I think it'd be nice to get some of the DRM'd freebies available. But right now, I've got three new Smashwords books in my reader and one of my favorite fanfic authors just posted a story of 180,000 words, so I'm set for a while. When I run out of entertaining non-DRM'd content, I'll revisit the issue.
