You need to maintain THREE COPIES MINIMUM of ANY important file: The original, an external drive copy, and an off-site copy.

Your computer's hard drive will fail. Fact o' life. Having a bootable backup of your system on a local external drive is important. But if the house burns or a thief drops in, you need to be able to restore from an off-site copy.
