I remember back in the 70's I read a book that was rumored to be by J.D. Salinger under another name. Let me google that....

Yep. "Birdy," by William Wharton. Apparently later it was determined that William Wharton was actually a writer by the name of Albert du Aime. At the time, though, I believed it, since I was fresh out of high school and had so recently read "Catcher in the Rye."
