Dean Koontz did something similar. Of course he didn't die however, there were 4-5 years between the second and third book in his Frankenstein trilogy. I actually quit reading Koontz for several years until the third book came out. Christopher Paolini is doing the same with his Inheritance Cycle books. He has three of them out however, the third and maybe fourth have been delayed for years. This is upsetting to some of the young adults who have followed that series.
