When I was a kid it was a point of pride with me to finish every book I started.

Even the complete pieces of dreck.

Then I tried to read the Bible. That put a stop to that. It wasn't very many pages in that I got so angry for poor Hagar that I--didn't quite throw the book across the room (it was a *book*; only barbarians would damage a *book*). But I slammed it shut, slapped it down on a shelf and didn't read another word of it for years.

It still makes me mad to think of it.

Since then I've gotten a lot less focused on finishing every book I start. Especially now that I read e-books, since the freebie e-books mean I end up with a lot of stuff that's outside my usual genres. Sure I'll give them a try, but if I don't like them, I don't see the point of dragging myself through them. Reading is supposed to be fun.

And every now and then I'll run into something that's just *so* offensive (torture scenes are a real sore point, or books where female characters are just caricatures, there to be strings to get the real people moving) that I'm not interested in subjecting myself to any more of that.
