They actually can last a few days but they need a LOT of aeration in the water. Sea monkeys are just brine shrimp. I used to raise them as food for my tropical fish. (No, I didn't buy them from the back of comic books. I bought packages of eggs at the pet shop, sea salt for the water, and used an aquarium pump for the aeration.)

As far as 'tricks' go, brine shrimp are photoactive. If you use a focused beam flashlight pointed into their water, they will move around depending upon where you point the beam.
