Sony support/help was nothing of the kind!
the solution was actually posted by grahamhopper on the "social answers microsoft" website. the following worked for me with no problems; XP machine:
"using windows xp and found that changing C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Sony Corporation to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Sony Corporation old did the trick straight off. Cant see why though."
