I have done a side-by-side examination of a new Reader and my 11 month old unit and there was variation in the background color or the contrast. (If anything my older unit looked a bit lighter in the background but not by enough to convince anyone else.)

From what we know from people that have sent in their units to Sony for out of warranty repair the cost to replace the screen alone is about equal to the cost of the Reader when new. If possible this would nearly double the cost of the Reader. Yes it is better, but is it $300 better?
