Ditto! I have two reading speeds, really fast and really slow. The former I use when I'm in a big hurry, which I usually am for school, and the latter when I'm enjoying something. I wish I could manage something in the middle.
My wife and son both read at one speed, fast. I envy them. When I'm in turtle mode, I'm conscious that I'm basically reading aloud, silently, if that makes any sense. Somewhere I read that there are two distinct reading styles -- you either read everything as if you were reading it aloud, or you just, well, read. (I guess that's what you mean, Sparrow, by subvocalising.) But sometimes I wish I could just turn off those voices in my head.
