There seems to be a whole range of books preceding the book.
Shards of Honour and Barrayar deal with events a couple of decades before The Warrior's Apprentice, but it's not essential to read them first, and many find TWA a better introduction to the series.

Falling Free is an excellent book, but although in the same universe, is not otherwise related to TWA. Dreamweaver's Dilemma is also not particularly linked.

I'm really pleased that Baen and Ms Bujold have decided to put TWA into the Baen Free Library.
