I think that having this self-published forum is a great idea. I haven't read any self-published books, but figure that statitics would be around 10% off what I consider quality books that I read from corporate published books.
If someone is a good writer and is trying to self-publish, where they get hurt is the actual promotion of the book, as I imagine that the self-publishers don't have a lot of money to sink into promotion. With that being said, most books put out by publishing companies are terrible, and a waste of time. Even people that can write sometimes get into a trap of cranking one book after another (usually being pushed by the publisher so that they can capitalize on profit) and the quality suffers, but these authors' keep selling tons of books, because of the in your face promotions, and skewed reviews (i.e. "This is a book to read if you want to really be dissapointed" being turned into "This is a book to read.").
Also, I think that it is hard to write a book, or at least a good one, I have been trying to write something for years now, and I just get bored with the book, after reading it over and over again, to make sure that I am grammatically correct, and making sense and not contradicting myself or changing concepts I have previously laid out.
And one last note, I think that for a writer to promote their on book by tooting their own horn, is just ridiculous particularly if no one has read it. Maybe one should say in their promotion "I hope that you find this book x, y, and z." instead of, "This book is x, y, and z." Of course, if the book is those things to someone besides the author, and they are willing for the writer to use their thoughts about the book.
