I picked a blacksnake off the road one day on my way to work. Later, a friend dropped by to chat. Knowing his fear of snakes, I kept the fellow in my heavy-duty Samsonite briefcase with the lid barely propped open with a pencil for air. Just then, the snake decided to push up on the lid. It was a heavy case, and I had no idea he had the strength to do that. I hoped at first my friend wouldn't notice the mysteriously rising briefcase lid, but finally had to capitulate and come clean with him. It was either that, or tell him the place was haunted, and he was even more scared of ghosts than he was of snakes. To this day he won't let me forget it.
