I do not know where this nonsense started. But I own a Kobo. And I could not ask for a crisper, sharp font than the built-in sans serif. There's no "clarity" not "contrast" issue with the Kobo. There might be a difference on paper spec sheets - but for enjoyable reading? There's nothing "lacking" in a Kobo's contrast nor clarity.
