#2 suggestion is spot on: Sigil
No need to know HTML if the big file is clean (enough).

Open the original huge EPUB: Save As book1.,

Now delete the un-wanted "splits" that don't contain book 1 parts (depends on how the original was done, some parts may be end of the splits.)

Look in "images" part of the book browser list, you can double click these and view them. delete those that don't belong with book 1.

Now clean up the first and last splits that may contain parts of other books: Highlight the wrong text and delete.

Save


Repeat for the next book. Open the original: save as book n...

The stylesheet may not be the cleanest around, (probably lots cleaner than some word conversions I have seen), but it will be correct.
