Reminds me of when I was in 'Nam. I'd been eating the local bread (baked in open air ovens) for six months, and was in the middle of enjoying a bit of it one day when our First Sargent asked me is I ever bothered to look at what I eat. I stopped eating long enough to notice two or three small flies in the remains of what I had just bitten off. After six months in country, this is small stuff, so I kept eating, counting the flies in each bite. I kept on eating the local bread for the rest of the time I was there, but got into the habit after that of counting flies while doing so.

There's an old story about how you can tell the length of time a missionary has been in a country. The new ones won't eat soup that has a fly in it. The ones who have been there a while will remove the fly and eat the soup. The ones who have been there the longest will eat the soup, flies and all.

I wouldn't think of doing it now, but that was another lifetime.
