Before deciding I want to buy a book I usually look at a few sources:

NY Times Best Seller list (others as well) for inspiration/ideas of things I might not consider reading.

Google/amazon to see if there is a preview available.

My local library to see if the book is available or on order, if it is I put a hold on it

Failing that, if it is not going to be ordered by the library then I may purchase the book in either analogue or digital format if I want it badly enough.
