For the most part... the time it takes you to read a normal page of text before tuning the page (unless you are a speed reader) is more than enough time for you to notice screen fade. In truth... a lot of people may report they don't have fading but its only because the change is not significant enough for them to notice. I have a 300 and a 505 and both fade "slightly" but not enough to bother me.
Many forums report the fading was a known problem that effected earlier versions of Vizplex EInk readers on the market (not just the Sony) but the problem has been fixed. This is not completely true. While the earlier screens may have had a known defect that was fixed, many of the new production models can still fade to some extent! My co worker purchase a new PRS-300 directly from Sony and took Delivery on July 30th, 2010. We did the sun fade test and it faded at least 20%.
For those of you who may be confused with the on the screen fading issue... It's very easy to see (test) if you want to check out your reader.
With the unit turned on and text displayed on the screen... hold the device so that half of the screen is shaded with something (like your hand, a piece of cardboard, etc) and the other half of the screen is in direct sunlight. Leave it for about 15 - 20 seconds, then refresh the display (i.e, turn the page). If you have the problem you'll see a clear difference in the contrast of the text between the two halves of the display.
Here's a photo showing an example of the Vizplex Screen fade problem. (A hand was held over the bottom left corner of the display)
