There is no way to do backlighting on eink displays. It's not just a Sony problem. eink is not transparent enough to allow the light to pass the eink.
If you were looking for a reading devices that has a touch screen with a stylus and onscreen keyboard, the iRex Iliad would have been the one to get. Granted it is $600, but it is also a larger screen with higher resolution. But the downside is the battery does not last as long. But it also has wifi.
