Hya Shona. Good to have your company. You've opted for an excellent reading device. Open the box, though, or go to the Sony site and study the instructions before you try to use it.

Being in Aberdeen (always good to welcome a fellow Scot -- especially from the family seat) you might find that, fine as the Sony hardware is, the Sony store and software isn't up to par. No problem, download the free Calibre library software and use that.

You'll find that your Sony reader is particularly effective with an ebook format called ePub. Calibre will automatically convert from pretty well any other format for you, as well as organising and cataloguing the new virtual library you're likely to build.

Do be sure, though, that the books you buy (unless already in ePub) are not locked by something called DRM (Digital Rights Management). They will not convert and you can't share them with a friend. There are ways and means of stripping DRM from an ebook, but they're only border-line legal and way over the heads of technodummies like you and me.

Stick around and you'll get all the advice you need here at MobileRead. A generous bunch of folks, and friendly with it.

Best wishes. Neil
