(BTW, virtually *all* the lines in the film come straight out of the book. You can hold it open while watching the film and follow the text, almost as if you were to have the script to Hamlet on your knees at the Old Vic).

as story and lines yes, I concur. 'The Maltese Falcon' has a dry effectiveness that is unique. But the other things of Hammett are poorer, while all the work of Chandler is very well crafted.
Hammett was indeed the parent, the inspirer. Our local followers, among whom
Rock Lobster is not the least talented, could have their say about this point.
