Chandler is fine, but he never wrote anything as good as 'The Maltese Falcon'. Hammett was the master.
(BTW, virtually *all* the lines in the film come straight out of the book. You can hold it open while watching the film and follow the text, almost as if you were to have the script to Hamlet on your knees at the Old Vic).
