I was an ornery child. Both my parents were readers and pushed reading. I resisted. When I was 10 they wanted me to practice guitar. I resisted that by reading instead, which I knew they'd approve of. I was hooked and would have lived at the NYC library if I could (I nearly did). But I did eventually get hooked on playing guitar and still am, many years later. Like I said, ornery kid .

My grandparents were blue collar folks and had a bit of an attitude toward "smarty pants" folks (I was apparently the quintessential smarty pants since I had an answer for everything, backed up by books). They tried to stop me from reading so much and wanted me to go outdoors and do "healthy things". They mostly did a far better job of raising me than did my folks, and I adored and respected them, other than the reading thing.
