I was put on a plane to San Francisco at the last minute, and just shortly after takeoff I started reading. Well, there was a loud grinding noise, the lights went off, and the plane dipped. It turned out there was complete engine failure on one side after one of the turbines tore apart and shredded the rest of an engine. Everyone was deathly silent, and then we eventually dumped a bunch of fuel and returned to Tokyo airport.
So: reading during a possible plane crash.

I'd probably do something religious, like take up a collection. (Apologies to Bob Hope, wherever he is.)
Seriously though, I wasn't reading when the small Cessna piloted by a friend's brother looked as if it was going to make the news. I did have my camera, however, and began taking pictures as fast as I could snap the shutter. I figured if that was it, at least I'd get some great shots on the way out.
Fortunately we landed safely, if a bit unsteadily, after almost running off the landing strip.
We went up the following week with another friend. I didn't tell him of our experience the previous week until we were airborne.
