Update:

I ended up getting a Pandigital Novel. Hacked it per instructions. I still need to install a SD card and download my Amazon books (but that's sort of not required since I've got my Kindle).

I did have it almost die once (don't know what happened, my kid had it at the time) where the screen went black. No matter what I did, the screen stayed dark. I ended up doing a hard reset and everything's peachy again.

I believe this will be perfect for my non-Amazon books.
