Amazon is trying to make formats irrelevant to all but the publishers and..uh..diehards
They could replace every .mobi on their store tomorrow, and as long as the Kindle and apps still read the book, who else would notice?
The typical Kindle consumer probably doesn't know or care what file extension is on their Kindle book.
