Actually there are more Native German speakers in Europe then English speakers. English only shares the 2nd place with Italian.

And that is before Switzerland with it's three languages on the scale. Germany is also the largest Economy. I just don't know where you people from the States get your ideas from.
The reason Amazon goes to the UK is that they have some English books to sell. Mostly independents and public domain that is as the big publishing houses still insist on DRM and regional restrictions.
Of course British publishing houses, holding British publishing rights, already sell ePUB in British eBook stores.
