Now if images and layout are important the PDF is far far superior that both MOBI and ePUB. And the kindle does support that format.

For most eBooks, there is nothing special about layout. So Mobi is just fine. Yes, ePub can do more, but if the layout doesn't requite it, then Mobi is ok.
One place ePub has been seen to shine these days is when the books contain images/photos. They sometimes tend to be better in ePub then Mobipocket.
