Books have always seemed less of an indulgence than fabric, plus even pre-ebook days they are easier to store and carry home! Even with the yeti with me I find it hard to buy just enough fabric to make an item - and he often encourages me! So I end up with several metres of skirt, trouser, waistcoat etc material. And I'm never organised enough to have a decent bag with me, so I have to use the shop's carrier bags, which dig in and break.
However I can fit quite a lot of books in my normal bag (currently a 30l rucksack), and heft them around without really noticing
The other thing with bookshops is that I've always worked within a few minutes walk of one, so I can spread the browsing and buying out. It probably does mean I've ended up spending more on books over the years than if it had been a bit harder to get them, but I'm not complaining
