An interesting bit of trivia in the Radio Times (UK TV mag):
"It's now thought that the first use of "Elemantary, my dear Watson" is actually in P. G. Wodehouse's 'Psmith. Journalist' (1915) - it's certainly not uttered by Holmes."

I didn't know we had Wodehouse to thank for that - along with so much else!
