Don't give up. It is a nice reader. I have the same problem as you (10.4.11 on a MacBook). I use a card reader and put my books on the memory card. PB sees them on the card. I'm hoping to upgrade my system soon and hopefully that'll fix the direct connection issue. Until then I happily use the memory card with a card reader.
