It would be readable on the vast majority of hardware that supports ePub since pretty much all of them besides the ipad support the same drm-scheme.

Actually, it isn't, they only opened a store for their reader in the states because it was expected by people due to the kindle, but that clearly isn't a major focus of theirs since they make hardware, you can see how little importance they placed on their ebookstore from the way they didn't launch any outside of north america and simply chose partners in the various countries.
