Problems with new PRS-505
I got a PRS-505 yesterday and am pleased with it -- except for what I am describing below. The software works well (running from Parallels on a Mac), and it is possible to transfer material directly to both the card and the internal memory by USB. But yesterday when I unmounted both volumes and unplugged the USB, the machine was stuck -- said it was connected to USB when it wasn't. The reset button on the back wouldn't work, the power wouldn't work -- nothing. I called up Sony, and we tried all the things I had already tried -- no luck. Suddenly, when I pushed the power switch for the 50th time, the thing restarted -- and hung, saying "starting up." At that point, I could get it to restart by pushing the reset button and then the power, but it would still hang (it may have been in a loop restarting). I called Sony a 3rd time, and we went through everything again, and nothing worked, but suddenly it came up, and now it works fine. The 505 was fully charged -- I have a Sony charger and did the preceding with it plugged in and not plugged in. Note that when it got stuck, I had it connected to a Mac, not to the library software.
On another note, I was surprised, after reading horror stories about the Sony site, to find it is actually quite well done. It is fast and responsive, and the software seems to work very well (when the 505 isn't stuck).
Does anyone have any ideas about this? I'm hesitant to plug the USB in again, because I don't want the thing to get stuck again. Thanks.
