Print out a picture of the Kindle from the Amazon site. Put it in a box and gift wrap it. When he opens it, tell him that it's out of stock and he's going to get one as soon as it's in stock or the new, improved model comes out. I wouldn't not give him one just because it's currently not in stock.

My wife and I have done this for each other and for other relatives when we order late or something doesn't show up in time. It may not be as good as actually having the item in hand, but it's the next best thing.
