Brent Spiner was speaking to the old man on the porch, as I recall. I don't believe Spiner was at the dinner table with the family. It was the pepper the old witch gave the grandson that finally convinced Grandpa of the truth about what everyone had been telling him.

When the pepper made him sneeze, his nose fell off into the napkin, making him realize everyone was right: he had indeed died. Thus with the words, "There's no fool like an old fool," he shuffled upstairs to climb back in his deathbed.
