edbro, Glen and GARussell, thanks for the responses. I knew somebody here would have read his books (I didn't expect to come across somebody who'd actually met the guy though!).
I think, on the basis of my friend's recommendation and your responses, I'll buy the first Robicheaux book and see what I think before buying any more.
