As mentioned, the touch screen on the nook can be used for "turning" pages when dark. It takes a little getting used to, and there are some annoying spots where it can't be used for turning pages, but for books it works great.
The touchscreen is less wasted space than on, say, the keyboard on the Kindle. It also works very well for scrolling around web pages when you use the browser.
PDF support is pretty rudimentary at the moment and one of the biggest feature improvement requests. There is no zooming. You can change font sizes but it usually just blows up the formating.
