In the context of ebooks it is another drm system regardless of whether they had previously used it for music and if they weren't having such a childish strop with adobe then I am sure some kind of cross-licensing deal could have been worked out that would have made the ipad more appealing to people with a large purchased epub collection helping both apple and consumers.

As far as being a rational business decision, they seem to have decided to help amazon dominate the ebook market and given that amazon also sell other content, maybe it won't seem such a good idea further down the line.
