Would the PalmPilot count, though, as ebooks were only one feature of a multi-use PDA? If we're going with "anything portable that can display an ebook", that would be pretty much "anything portable that can display text", since Project Gutenberg has been digitizing books in plain-text form since the 1970s. I'd nominate the GRiDpad in that case.
Of course, this starts getting into problems at the other end, too. Would an iPad count? A smartphone? My 505 if I put PRS+ on it and could play Sudoku? It gets more and more complicated trying to define what kind of device we're actually talking about.
