Did you read Kristin Lavransdatter?
All of them, though my favourite is "The Master of all Desires". None of her heroines are blodthirsty, but naive and intelligent, and while pushed into dependence upon men by society - in their hearts they remain completely independent and that is what save them and shapes their destiny. And the stories are great fun to read.

And no, I have not read Kristin Lavransdatter (I recognise it is a black mark... I know I should have)
