I used to read w/ my ThinkPad held at 90 degrees quite often using the old Glassbook ebook reader program (since bought by Adobe to be released as the Adobe ebook reader, then folded into Adobe Reader).

Works fine if a bit heavy --- use a pillow on your lap to cushion it.
